Sarah Martha DeVeaux was the daughter of William and Ann Barnwell De Veaux [1] [2] and was born in South Carolina. Her first marriage was to James Alger.
29 Aug 1811 Sarah Alger of the city of Savannah brought a petition to the Judge of the Bryan County Superior court as widow and executrix for the Will of her last husband James Alger against Richard Thorpe Keating. Richard was summoned by the sheriff to appear before the court. 23 Nov 1812 the finding was for the plaintiff in the sum of $72.36 including costs. 23 Nov 1812, John H. Morel and Sarah M. Morel case had a jury trial, recovered their damages against Richard Thorpe Keating and the judgement was signed 25 Nov 1812. [3]
Following James Alger’s death she married John Henry Morel (before 23 Nov 1812).
She and John had 3 children, Emily survived and two other children died in infancy.
Sarah was ill with inflammation of her lungs immediately prior to her death and was living on Perry Street in Jackson Ward of Savannah, Georgia.[4] Sarah signed her Will on 4 Sept 1834 and signed a codicil on 6 Sept 1834. Sarah was buried on 7 Sep 1834. It is estimated she died the day prior to her burial. In her Will she specified she wanted “to be buried along side of my dear father and mother, and that the remains of my two dear deceased little children…be laid with me…. On 13 Oct 1834 a document was entered into the Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia court records sworn to by James Ker (sp?) that Sarah M. Morel signed the Will. [5]
